Germany has triggered a rare three-way battle for United Nations Security Council seats, as it competes with Austria and Portugal on Wednesday for the two seats allotted to the U.N.’s “Western Europe and Others” region.

Last year, Wang Huiyao argued that the council’s current structure—five permanent members and 10 nonpermanent members—“reflects, at best, the geopolitical realities at the time of the last set of Security Council reforms in 1965.”
