Mathew Carr: Why I want to be independent UK member of parliament for Cities of London and Westminster (2)

June 10-18, 2024 — I’m Mathew Carr and here’s what I want for the lovely people of London and Westminster, as I seek to represent them in the British parliament via next month’s national elections.

Prioritizing wisely. Humility. Owning mistakes. Collaboration not divisiveness. Security via tough negotiation. Trade. Peace, not war. Improving policies and market rules before they are broken or exploitative. Avoiding crises instead of stoking and then taking advantage of them. Truthfulness. Giving credit where it is due.

It’s about improving society for children. And stopping what feels like a war on ordinary people.

Better policing. Less anti-social behavior. Improved housing, mental-health services and welfare — for those who really need help. Considered tax reform. See below. I’m unafraid of debate.

Some controversial policies that need to be considered to help with British government finances/indebtedness and to push power back to the people somewhat from where it is now — too much in the hands of a few in the government and in big business. I’m trying to give some credit where it is due — stop demonising rivals.

  1. People not on welfare should pay about £5-£10 to use NHS (the National Health Service) services. This will ease demand for services and save costs, easing the push to privatise the NHS. NHS whistleblowers need better protection. LibDems have some good ideas.
  2. Regulate recreational drugs, easing the pressure on police and creating a valuable new source of government revenue.
  3. Better welfare protection for all … including incentives to return to work or begin work.
  4. Recover lost mental-health services.
  5. Higher costs on polluters to drive toward sustainability and boost government revenue from bad behavior. (The Labour party and LibDems have some good ideas.)
  6. Wealth taxes (Green party is considering this and I’ve been pushing for consideration of it for years). Eg Brazil’s global proposal for 2% per year of wealth as tax. Workers Party of Britain has some good ideas.
  7. Cheaper clean transport.
  8. More jury decisions amid litigation.
  9. More referendum when governments make important decisions that impact the people…eg entering a war, sending battleships. Real democracy. These referendum can potentially be eased and speeded up by using face recognition and mobile phones, for instance. Debate needed.
  10. Better whistleblower protections throughout the economy.
  11. Better education (the Tories have done some good work to boost social mobility via education).
  12. Urban renewal to make cities more sustainable and cut housing costs.

BTW: I was brutally fired by New-York based Bloomberg News in 2020 … as my mum lay dying …shortly after the start of the pandemic … after I had called out for years the bad behavior by the US and Bloomberg News in relation to pathetic climate action and climate-news reporting …internally in my employing firm … as I reported about natural gas, coal, oil and climate.

I’ve been gently yet determinedly deplatformed since being fired. This website has been hacked and censored multiple times. I’ve even been arrested recently, I believe as an intimidation tactic…it might be a weird coincidence, of course.

I’ve been fighting for more sustainable global markets via reporting and commentary for more than 20 years. Peace, equity and justice are key to saving nature and climate for our children.

I grew up on a small farm and one of my first jobs was picking potatoes. My other employers have ranged from horticultural businesses, aluminium miners and take-away shops to news outfits.
