Europe’s green plan includes a 72.2 billion euro Social Climate Fund to soften the blow to less wealthy people that will be hit with higher natural gas, electricity or transport costs.
As the bloc races to cut emissions to net zero by the middle of the century, the fund will help it leave no one behind, said Frans Timmermans, vice president of the European Commission.
The plan will hopefully attract more countries into embracing ambitious climate action at UN climate talks in November in Glasgow, he said.
There are 34 million households in energy poverty in the EU.
