Aug. 11, 2026 (Clacton) -– A massive traffic jam caused by a crash on Monday would have been allayed by an extra bridge over the southern River Colne.
Here is why there isn’t one.

Why this does not exist:

Building a high-clearance bridge solves the problem of keeping maritime channels open for boats, but the environmental damage to a protected tidal estuary comes from factors far beyond vessel passage.
A single high-level viaduct across the Colne Estuary—similar to the Orwell Bridge over the River Orwell further north—would trigger several major ecological impacts:
- Destruction of Intertidal Habitat: Even high bridges require massive support piers driven deep into soft mudflats and saltmarshes. In tidal zones, saltmarshes serve as crucial “blue carbon” sinks and coastal defenses. Removing or compacting intertidal sediment permanently destroys feeding territory for aquatic species and invertebrate beds.
- Disruption to Avian Flyways: The Colne Estuary is a Ramsar site and Special Protection Area (SPA) protecting tens of thousands of overwintering waterbirds, including dark-bellied brent geese, redshanks, avocets, and golden plovers. A high bridge deck, along with structural cables and lighting, creates a major physical and visual barrier directly across low-altitude feeding flyways, causing collision hazards and forcing flocks to abandon established roosting sites.
- Construction Impact on Shellfisheries: Sinking giant concrete piers into soft marine clay requires years of heavy piling, channel dredging, and seabed disturbance. The resulting underwater acoustic shockwaves disorient fish, while thick suspended silt plumes drift downstream, smothering filter-feeders like the historic Colchester Native Oyster beds.
- Predator Perches and Light Pollution: Tall bridge structures provide artificial perching platforms for apex predators (such as peregrine falcons), putting severe hunting pressure on ground-nesting waders. Continuous roadway lighting at night alters nocturnal feeding cycles for shorebirds and disorients marine invertebrates.
- Traffic Runoff into a Marine Conservation Zone: A high-level bridge brings a high-volume road deck. During heavy rainfall, toxic highway runoff—containing brake dust, microplastics from tire wear, heavy metals, and oil residues—washes straight off the deck into the protected marine habitat unless vast containment and filtration systems are built directly on top of the fragile marshland.
- Altered Tidal Flow and Scouring: Estuary currents are delicately balanced. Placing large concrete piers into the tidal flow alters local water velocity, causing scouring in some areas and abnormal silt accumulation in others, which degrades neighboring mudflats downstream.
Because the Colne Estuary carries the highest level of statutory environmental protection under international law, proving an “overriding public interest” strong enough to justify these ecological trade-offs remains a very high legal and financial hurdle.

A serious two-vehicle crash involving a car and a lorry on the A12 near Colchester caused widespread gridlock.
The collision occurred near Junction 28 (by the Colchester United football stadium) and forced the complete closure of both the northbound and southbound carriageways for around seven hours while emergency services, including the air ambulance and police, responded to the scene.
The major shutdown caused heavy congestion to back up toward Marks Tey (Junction 25) and Ardleigh (J29) as traffic diverted onto local roads.
Long delays have also been compounded by ongoing National Highways roadworks and central reservation maintenance along the A12 corridor between Chelmsford and Colchester.
