Statement to voters
Here’s my top three priorities
Standing up for residents – I will campaign for rent controls, along with accountability for landlords and developers. Deansgate is a cultural centre, but it is home too.
Fight for community spaces – I know how important clean air and green space is. I will work with community groups of local green spaces – working with the council to control litter, create play areas and more trees!
Support culture – I will get stuck in with community groups and work with our cultural spaces to do more to support residents.

Green website:
Sarah Wakefield (above) has been announced as Green Party candidate for the upcoming Makerfield by-election. Sarah is 38 years old, a mum with two young children, and a councillor on Manchester City Council.
Currently on maternity leave as a charity director, she previously worked in retail with a focus on sustainable food and is a trustee of a community organisation.
On being announced as Green Party candidate, Sarah Wakefield said:
“I am proud to be representing the Green Party in the Makerfield byelection. It is vital in a democracy that voters are given a choice of who they want to vote for. Together we can bring back the hope that politics can create a better life for ourselves and our children. This is what the Green Party represents.
“We showed in Gorton and Denton we can take on and beat Reform, whose backward-looking and divisive politics needs to be challenged head-on with a message that the future can be better and fairer than the failed status quo. Don’t vote in anger, vote in hope.”

The Green Party candidate in the upcoming 2026 Makerfield by-election is now Sarah Wakefield. She was announced on 26 May after the party’s first selected candidate, Chris Kennedy, withdrew amid controversy over old social media posts.
What we know about Wakefield so far:
- She is 38 years old.
- She is a councillor on Manchester City Council.
- She is currently on maternity leave from her role as a charity director.
- Before that she worked in sustainable food retail.
- She is also reported to be a trustee of a community organisation.
- She has two young children.
Politically, the Greens appear divided over how aggressively to fight the seat. Some senior figures reportedly want to avoid splitting the anti-Reform vote and helping Reform UK, while others argue the Greens should contest strongly everywhere.
Wakefield herself has framed the campaign around “hope” and presenting a progressive alternative to both Labour and Reform UK.
The by-election itself has become unusually high-profile because Andy Burnham is standing for Labour, with Reform UK also treating the contest as a major target.
Burnham wants to replace PM Keir Starmer.
