Feb. 25-26, 2025 — The people, otherwise known as the left in Britain, have a bigger chance in a by election Thursday because some parties withdrew and decided not to contest.
“I am determined that we will build a sense of unity of the left in this country,” said Jeremy Corbyn, a Your Party leader and former PM candidate.

The parties and independents representing real people do not “have time for the luxury of endless internal debate,” Corbyn said earlier this month after I asked him if he was doing enough to form a coalition to take on Labour, the Tories and Reform, which all lean right and decline to focus on justice for the people and more equality.
“If you look for differences between people, you can always find them,” Corbyn said of the left. “But you also notice that independents and left groups have all not contested the (Gorton &) Denton by election because they want to make sure that a anti war, anti austerity candidate wins, and so they’ve withdrawn … in favor of ensuring that the Greens get a run at that to make sure they win it. That’s sensible politics.”

Zohran Mamdani already did it in New York after Labour’s Sadiq Kahn did it in London. The power of these two will be limited by state and national governments.
In Gorton & Denton, near Manchester in Middle England, the region is not quite so city based, so the outcome is probably deterministic of what’s possible in more rural settings, globally.
Hannah Spencer, a 34-year-old local plumber and Trafford councillor, is the front runner according to betting markets and some polls …though her lead has narrowed in recent days.

Labour under PM Keir Starmer is unpopular right now because it’s failed to enact the “change” it promised in the national election in the lead up to winning office in the middle of 2024 …after 14 years of the Tories.

Upshot: If the Greens fail to win this, it will demonstrate how biased the corrupt the political, media and social-media system is in this country. I’m based in England.
And just because the Greens do win it …if they pull it off … does not mean there’s true democracy in Britain, either.
I’m worried a win will make “the people” even more complacent in the face of the widest ever attacks on human rights by improperly regulated politics, media and corporations.
