Seeking universal basic income at COP30: automatic finance just might win friends, finally provide climate justice (1)

Opinion by Mathew Carr

Proposals to link universal basic income and climate justice do make sense.

But countries might struggle to allow the United Nations to pay directly into their people’s bank accounts (or central bank digital currency accounts).

National governments will probably want to maintain control of money flows in order to claim the political win with their electorates.

One of the big ploblems at climate negotiations is the rich countries promise finance and it often does not turn up.

Making payments automatic could spur some national governments to get on board.
