WSJ unedited…Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed victory in the country’s election, but in a stunning setback, he failed to secure an outright majority.

Some voters are unhappy (🔐 read for free) about high unemployment, inflation and the Hindu nationalist leader’s polarizing politics. Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party will have to rely on coalition allies to reach a majority in the lower house of parliament and form a government.

It’s the first election since 2014, when Modi won his first term as prime minister, that his party hasn’t gotten an absolute majority on its own.

Modi would be only the second leader after Jawaharlal Nehru, the country’s first prime minister, to return to power for a third straight term.

The opposition hasn’t conceded defeat.

CarrZee: Modi sought to divide the Indian population along religious lines. He failed to properly protect women. He has now paid the price to some extent.
