Assange given further leave to appeal extradition to the US

May 20, 2024 — High Court decided not to immediately extradite whistleblower Julian Assange, granting him further leave to appeal the US attempt to bring him to its soil for allegations related to hacking and espionage.

The trial covers important questions about free speech and the reach of national law in the internet age.

The judges have granted leave to appeal on grounds 4 and 5 – related to First Amendment protections and freedom of expression. The other ground (related to the death penalty) has been rejected. The lawyers have until 2 pm on 24th May to file an agreed case outline.
