Why the UK should broadcast the May 20 Assange hearing (1)

May 10, 2024 — If you want access to the Assange hearing on May 20, 2024 – apply within the next 50 minutes (I’m assuming the deadline is summer time in the UK)

As I argued for live access, I argued the hearing should be broadcast globally. Here’s why — this is what I said:

Dear recipient,

This Assange case covers many important matters of public interest (beyond Julian Assange’s accountability for his actions) … including how governments regulate and interact with journalists, whistleblowers, hackers … and more widely: how the judicial and executive branches of government interact with the press (the fourth estate) to improve global society — rather than worsen society by stoking real wars, culture wars and fear.

This matter is also likely to set a precedent on how countries limit the human rights of people located in other nations … as the world becomes more globalised via social media, the www, etc.

Even wider, the matter may influence whether the world needs to continue to spend trillions of pounds on security and military …or should it shift toward other priorities such as human rights protection, climate action and nature protection. This Assange matter relates to not only justice in a narrow sense but in the widest possible sense.

Therefore I should be allowed live access to the hearing, so I can report what happens as it occurs — I’m a journalist who’s been covering whistleblowing laws in the UK and how inadequate they are for many years (please search for “whistleblowing” or “whistleblower” or “Assange” at carrzee.org – search bar is at the end of any story on the website). I don’t have a large following but, I believe, an influential one, including in India, where national elections in the world’s most populous country are currently taking place. Indian law has a strong connection with UK law). My website is seeking to report on the need for a more sustainable world, so these matters are crucial for my readers.

Further, because this Assange case is so important globally, I request/suggest the court give me permission to broadcast the hearing on my x account @CarrZee (or another platform if the court prefers) to enhance the quality of public debate on these matters around the world.

Indeed, the UK judiciary is such an important and influential voice, the UK government/courts should decide to broadcast it yourself, if possible, in my opinion.

I say this with respect, perhaps not fully understanding the potential global legal implications. You could seek advice from UK parliament on this if that’s appropriate (or even advice from other judiciaries around the world).

Making the hearing completely public could boost the people’s confidence in the judiciary … and not just here in the UK.

Thanks for making this application time efficient and easy.
