Governments should not have the power to shut down press; Israel is stoking its cover up

Opinion by Mathew Carr

May 6, 2024 — Israel is pretending Al Jazeera is biased … but it knows the media outlet is exposing the shameful behavior of its government and military.

The move to stop the media company’s operations in Israel should be put to a vote, a referendum, of the Israeli people.

No government should have the right to dismantle one of the four great estates of nationhood (lawmakers, executive, judiciary and press).

It’s not immediately clear to me what law Israel used in order to make the move.

This FT story does not cover it:

Shlomo Karhi, Israel communications minister

Unanimous? Really?
