April 17, 2024 — G7 foreign ministry leaders, under guidance of the Italian Presidency of the “liberal” nation grouping, intends to “renew collaboration with Africa in a spirit of mutual respect,” according to a statement.
“In this key to equal partnership with Africa, the Ministers will also address the development/migration nexus, to combat the root causes of irregular [I assume this means uninvited and unwanted] migration, promoting the sustainable growth of the continent through new investments, job creation, training, energy transition.”
Meeting is taking place April 17-19 in Capri, quite a nice island.
CarrZee: Given how hot Africa is becoming, largely because of the historical emissions of the G7 nations, this is going to require some magic. I believe Europe will need to boost its intake of migrants because of its lack of action on climate mitigation and adaptation.
World Bank meetings this week may help boost finance.
Luckily enough, the pretty island off Naples has some magic.

Italy has born much of the brunt of Europe’s immigration crisis because of its proximity to Africa.

The first meeting of the G7 Foreign Ministers in Capri
The meeting will take place in Capri from 17 to 19 April.
04/15/2024

The meeting scheduled in Capri from 17 to 19 April 2024 is the first of two meetings of the G7 Foreign Ministers that will be hosted in Italy during 2024. As declared by the Vice President of the Council and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation , Hon. Antonio Tajani, the objective is to strengthen the role of the G7 as the main consultation forum between the large liberal democracies and as a factor of stability in the face of the major crises taking place at a global level.
The agenda of the work will therefore focus on the main themes at the center of the international debate, starting from the situation in the Middle East . Among the topics under discussion are the serious humanitarian crisis and the resumption of a significant and incisive political process for the “two peoples, two states” solution. More generally, a discussion will be promoted on how to build a credible political horizon for the region that guarantees peace and security.
The worrying situation in the Red Sea will also find space on the agenda of the work of the G7 Foreign Ministers, with particular reference to the safety of navigation and the repercussions on trade routes, in particular towards the Mediterranean.
The response to Russian aggression in Ukraine will remain at the center of the G7 agenda. The Italian Presidency intends to confirm the G7’s solid 360-degree support for Kyiv, guaranteeing full military, political and financial support, aiming for a just and lasting peace.
We will discuss the stability of the Indo-Pacific , a priority region for political balances and world trade.
The Italian Presidency also intends to renew collaboration with Africa in a spirit of mutual respect. In this key to equal partnership with Africa, the Ministers will also address the development/migration nexus, to combat the root causes of irregular migration, promoting the sustainable growth of the continent through new investments, job creation, training, energy transition .
Major global issues will also find space in the debate. These include food security, energy security, the fight against climate change, cyber security and Artificial Intelligence, which opens up enormous opportunities for humanity but presents significant risks.
A translated press release:
We have a great responsibility on our shoulders and we intend to honor it to the best of our ability, demonstrating once again how capable Italy is of charting the course.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni
On 1 January 2024, Italy assumed, for the seventh time, the Presidency of the G7: the group that brings together Italy, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. The G7, in which the European Union also participates, is united by common values and principles and plays an irreplaceable role in the defense of freedom and democracy and in the management of global challenges.
The Italian Presidency will last until 31 December 2024 and includes a busy program of technical meetings and institutional events which will be spread across the entire national territory. The main event, the G7 Leaders’ Summit, will take place from 13 to 15 June in Puglia.
Among the priorities of the Italian Presidency will be the defense of the international system based on the force of law. The Russian war of aggression on Ukraine has undermined its principles and unleashed growing instability, visible in various crisis hotspots. Equally important is the conflict in the Middle East, with its consequences on the global agenda.
The relationship with developing nations and emerging economies will be central. Attention to Africa is a priority. The challenge is to build a partnership model that benefits everyone, far from paternalistic or predatory logic. Particular attention will also be dedicated to the Indo-Pacific region.
Italy will dedicate great importance to migration issues and will place some of the main challenges of our times on the agenda, including the climate-energy nexus and food security. The G7 has the responsibility and duty to identify, together with its global partners, innovative solutions.
Artificial Intelligence will also find space in the Italian program. Technology that can generate great opportunities but also enormous risks, as well as impacting geopolitical balances. It is necessary to develop governance mechanisms and ensure that AI is human-centered and controlled by humans, giving concrete application to the concept of algorithmics.
