Feb. 15, 2024 — Guardian: London’s best known bagel shop, which claimed it never closed its doors, has been shuttered after its Brick Lane premises were apparently repossessed by its landlord.
….
I’m asking the question in the headline because the Guardian newspaper is reporting its closure is down to this:
“One of the owners of the building housing the store confirmed to the Guardian on Wednesday that he had instructed his solicitors to take back possession of the site.”
CarrZee: why instruct the solicitors now? There may be a more mundane reason than anti-Jewish sentiment, of course.
And this:
…Open 24 hours a day, the current shop has existed in one form or another since two Israeli-born brothers took over what was then the Evering Bakery from the previous Israeli owners in 1987.
See the whole story.
Context here is cool:
Before it vanished from view, the brand’s website stated: “Founded in 1855, the Beigel Shop was the original and first beigel bakery to open on Brick Lane. Since then, this landmark institution has continued to provide the historic tastes and traditions of the Jewish East End, mixed with the flavours of an evolving multicultural community.”
