Kerry, special US presidential envoy on climate, said at Davos Tuesday via Reuters video above:
“And in my judgement, the innovation scale is really beginning to already tip in in ways that are very exciting.
“We have 88 new battery companies in the United States since the Inflation Reduction Act passed — and I don’t know I haven’t looked at their technologies, I haven’t examined where they are today, I did see a few of them a number a couple of years ago — but someone’s gonna break through here.
… “and you get some major, you know, you get not four hours, but four days or more on batteries and you start to get, you know, AI playing a role which it will play a role in managing grids and doing some of the things we need to do to make us much more efficient … and all of a sudden the prices start to come down, like they have.”
Kerry sort of dodged a question on the need for carbon pricing (the US mostly does not make polluters pay) …but he did at least say that the world needs to get better at presenting carbon costs in markets — or he at least implied that.
Azerbaijani Economy Minister Mikail Jabbarov said his country, host of COP29, has a high bar to reach for the conference late this year that will follow COP28 in Dubai.
It will focus on “how to” deliver climate finance … rather than “what to” deliver, he said at the same event where Kerry spoke.
