US dropped objection last week to Article 6.8 text after COP28 Presidency huddled with America’s envoys: Perspectives (2)

Dec.18-20, 2023 — CarrZee: Wonders whether globalish / G20ish minimum carbon price (carbon tax) could be achieved via article 6.8 of the Paris climate deal, following COP28 outcome.

Article 6.8 text agreed but 6.2 and 6.4 texts were not agreed.

Minimum price could advance incrementally over time to help underpin projects that reduce GHG.

Axel Michaelowa, founding partner Perspectives Climate Change, speaking on a video call Monday:

“It was really unusual because the US objected to the 6.8 text, then the chair went down to the US table in the last session and then the US withdrew its objection, which is also very unusual.”

Usually article 6 texts agreed as a package.
