US and China envoys hold joint press meeting at end of COP28; vow collaboration

China and US to review compliance with Paris agreement.

Will operationalize joint working group on climate change.

China indicates both countries may update NDCs early (but doesn’t say it clearly, according to the English translation provided).

China participation at the meeting wasn’t flagged by UNFCCC secretariat on its website.

US envoy John Kerry said the climate crisis was an immediate threat for some small island nations (which is a bit weird as it’s also a threat for the US. But he didn’t say this).

He didn’t specifically answer a question on when the US would ease back on LNG exports.

When asked by Bloomberg was the US doing enough, he didn’t address tightening of the US GHG target for 2030, reiterating it was for a cut of 50-52% vs 2005 levels.

The US has used a vastly unfair portion of the global carbon budget. I will look into China’s fair share of the global carbon budget.

China negotiator Xie Zhenhua didn’t take questions, leaving the stage before they started.
