Oct. 8-10, 2023 — Israel has spent years provocatively encroaching on Palestine like NATO encroached on Russia, partly causing the Ukraine war.
Russia is now supporting Iran, which is supporting Hamas as it invaded Israel Saturday.
I’m not excusing the horrific behavior by Hamas.
US and Britain are supporting Israel.
Result will probably be higher-than-needed oil prices …
indeed Brent crude is up 4% to $88 early Monday morning London time …
…and perhaps this is what the US and Russia ultimately want because they are such big producers of fossil fuels.
Remember …this flare up / new war (unclear right now) happened after the oil price plunged the past few days.
This new war is probably also designed to distract the media and taxpayers from the disastrous failure in global leadership on climate action ….that has lead to surging global temperatures in 2023.
Global climate talks will now take place behind the curtain of another deliberate war that could have and should have been avoided.
The US could have stopped Israel from encroaching on Palestine. Yet it didn’t.

Bertrand (unedited):
Haaretz, the Israeli newspaper of record, seems to be one of the only mainstream voices of reason in the wider West right now.
Virtually no Western government has voiced any opposition to the decision by the Israeli government to order “a complete siege” on 2 million people, half of them children. The exact quote by the Israeli Defense Minister: “no electricity, no food, no fuel, no water, everything is closed, we are fighting human animals”. Something which, if conducted, would rank among the worst crimes against humanity in history.
You can perfectly condemn the violence against Israeli civilians (and I do, I find it absolutely disgusting) but at the same time say this doesn’t give the right, moral or legal, to kill or starve innocent civilians in turn. In fact you MUST say this, it’s the only morally correct position. The absence of any public opposition to this by Western governments means morality, human rights, basic humanity has completely collapsed in the West, everything they claim “their values” stand for.
In fact if Israel proceeds with this and if the wider West doesn’t condemn it, this will undoubtedly prove catastrophically consequential for both Israel and the West. Much like the war on terror and the collective punishment of the people of Afghanistan and Iraq was catastrophically consequential for the US, with repercussions that will be felt for decades to come. It will widen the already widening divide between the West and the rest, destroy Western credibility more than it already was, destroy any hope for Israel to reconciliate with its neighbors (let alone Palestinians) for decades to come, which will obviously be a serious blow to its long-term security. So even from an Israeli security perspective it makes little sense. Which by the way was probably the whole point behind the Hamas attacks in the first place… This is all so stupid.
“What would you do” people will ask? As for any crime, I’d aim to identify the actual perpetrators and have them face trial. I’d also totally rethink my relationship with Palestinians because such events are an undeniable proof the current purely-security-driven and land-stealing approach doesn’t work. You cannot act like this happens in a vacuum and was “unprovoked”, as most statements by Western governments falsely claim. We live in a Yin-Yang world: if you don’t seek harmony, if you want to have your Yang predominant over Yin, there’ll unavoidingly be backlash, it is a fundamental law of nature.
