Since Truss is Gone … this on King Charles III may Make His Attendance at COP27 More Probable (3)

By Mathew Carr

Oct. 23, 2022 – Former UK PM Liz Truss’s government said Charles should not attend COP27 — the UN climate conference — next month.

Charles is head of state of 13 other countries so he does not need to do what he’s told by the UK government. At least, not always.

The late Queen Elizabeth gave a rousing speech at last year’s climate conference, which set up some global market rules needed to spur clean spending.

More rules need to be set next month before investors will get confident their clean investment won’t lose to a comeback from existing dirty tech.

Here below is the key section from this interview with Sri Lanka’s President Ranil Wickremesinghe in “the Leader”:

“Talking as a member of the Commonwealth, King Charles is the head of the Commonwealth and last February at the CHOGM [the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting], we passed a resolution on climate change.

“Therefore, he should be here. I think the UK government should reconsider it and enable him to be in Egypt for COP27 because he has an important role to play.”

The new British PM, maybe Penny Mordaunt or Rishi Sunak, probably won’t seek to patronise Charles and Commonwealth nations the way Truss apparently did.

The UK does not get to boss other nations around, anymore…was the subtext of Sri Lanka’s comments. Colonialism should exist only in the past.

Unedited:

President Ranil Wickremesinghe, in an interview with Pasini Withanage on The Leader YouTube channel on Thursday (13), emphasized the importance of King Charles III attending the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) scheduled to be held in Egypt from 6 – 18 November 2022.

The President made this observation in response to a statement made by Buckingham Palace on October 02 which stated that a decision had been made for King Charles III not to attend COP27.

The President of last year’s summit and member of Liz Truss’s Cabinet Alok Sharma however had stated that King Charles III should attend the upcoming climate change conference. Sharma was responding to a report which claimed British Prime Minister Liz Truss had ordered the king not to attend the conference.
