Opinion by Mathew Carr
Women and men showcasing their art Sunday night was both terrifying and tantalising — because there were carnal expressions of deep disappointment about how uncaring the world’s become and a certain stubborn refusal to give in to the malaise.
The event (in the headline) was held in a packed historic George Tavern in East London, which itself is under an existential threat.
All the acts I saw included heartfelt sincerity and the dancers, poets, musicians and organisers all deserve congratulations for pulling it all together in a sometimes-mesmerising way.
Themes tackled by the artists included deep societal injustice and the increasingly difficult pursuit of love and meaning….especially if you are young and grappling with an overpriced and broken housing market.
We are like lambs to the slaughter was one leading idea of the first act.
Angst about parental and societal judgment in an age of anti-woke nonsense was particularly prevalent.
