—Stevenson: Citi traders: really rich, really competitive, really sad
Review by Mathew Carr
At the Gary Stevenson, former City trader, show, Hackney Empire, Thursday night:
It’s the winning that matters….not necessarily the money, is one of the apparent messages, from his talk show….which is promoting his book — the Trading Game.
The bank, one of the world’s biggest, was too focussed on winning (like other elements of the current economic system) …instead of delivering more equality, was a key message of Stevenson.
He’s suffered severe depression.
“I was so obviously sick, but because I was making so much money, no one could see it.”
“We’ve made the world so harsh.”
“You can care about yourself AND you can care about others.”
You don’t have to choose one or the other, he said.
“If we can’t break down it’s me or us …we’ll be in trouble.”
Stevenson said he was considering the idea that a new political party, or something, might be needed to take societal power back to the people, from the billionaires.
Voting was one of few tools available to people.
Other than transferring wealth from the super rich, he didn’t appear to have a specific plan. (I’ve not yet read his book.)
One observer, standing outside the venue after the show, said: Stevenson has good messages ….solutions, not so much.
