Some people now call Jan. 26 “invasion day” by the way, because the country was colonised by the British and remains part of the Commonwealth of Nations.

Australia Day is the official national day of Australia. Observed annually on 26 January, it recognizes the 1788 landing of the First Fleet and raising of Great Britain’s Union Flag by Arthur Phillip at Sydney Cove in New South Wales.
