EU to Emit as Little as 11 Billion Tons of CO2e in 20 Years to 2050 — 3 Years of US Emissions at Current CO2 Levels (1)

An EU advisory board yesterday recommended keeping the EU’s cumulative greenhouse gas emissions below 11-14 billion CO2e between 2030 and 2050, and reducing EU greenhouse gas
emissions by 90-95 % by 2040, relative to 1990.

Note the above is GHG, the below is just CO2 (so it probably should be 2 years of current US GHG emissions in the headline).

In 2022 — US CO2 emissions grew by 0.8% (or 36 Mt) to 4.7 billion tons. “The annual growth was much slower than 2021’s spurt but still a deviation from the previous decade’s declining trend. While most other countries shifted away from natural gas in the face of last year’s price spikes, the United States increased its consumption. Emissions from natural gas increased 89 Mt, more than supplanting the 69 Mt decline in coal emissions,” said the IEA.
