No more wars in our name; secretish security meeting to be held in UK Parliament today

Opinion and reporting by Mathew Carr

May 23, 2024 — Prime Minister Rishi Sunak looked decidedly uncomfortable as he called the election yesterday for July 4, the Independence Day where the newly formed US shrugged off its nasty British overlords in 1776.

This timing is no coincidence. This might be a surprise for many of us. It also might be part of a multi-year plan.

The days of imperialism and colonialism need to end.

The world already has many unnecessary wars, including in Ukraine and Gaza.

So it’s potentially sinister that there are secretish (or private at least) meetings being held in UK Parliament on “security strategy” less than 24 hours after Sunak called the election.

I say potentially because it might be mundane … but … if so … why not be at least a little more transparent?

Note there are no details of the meeting. Taxpayers deserve to know more.

There were intriguing flights by US military planes around the wider area where the Iranian president’s US-built helicopter crashed May 19.

Flight Radar – the aircraft had travelled from near Washington DC, Andrews Airforce Base, Camp Springs, 2 days earlier

Further, huge US aircraft are taking off from British soil and apparently refuelling fighter jets around the Mediterranean Sea.

Meanwhile the for-sale Telegraph newspaper in London read by Sunak’s political party members is damaging its monetary value by pretty much calling for war with Iran.

Enough.

Warmongering as an election-winning strategy is so last century.

I sense that, while Sunak might be a slicker teller of untruths than Boris Johnson was (he doesn’t smirk like Boris did when he lied), the present British PM is not a warmonger in the Anglo-American mold.

He might be being pushed into war by the US, which is now the overlord.

Maybe he does not want to say it quite yet … but perhaps Sunak is pushing for a more peaceful world where political, economic and military power is shared more evenly around the globe.

He’s probably also worried about being caught up personally in war crimes…which could worsen over the summer …if the reckless baby killing is allowed to continue.

Note also that the parliament is discussing this week some pretty important law about prisoner release …that might give ministers considerable new powers. See below.

(more to come)
